After exploring some stunning waterfalls in the Umpqua National Forest, I headed south to one of Oregon’s prized natural features, Crater Lake. I’ve been to Crater Lake many times, but never in the middle of winter. I was definitely excited to shoot, especially since there was a full moon that night which would allow me to capture images in the middle of the night. I arrived pretty late in the evening and started shooting and hiking under the powerful moonlight, which was such a beautiful experience and a great way to finish off the last day of 2017. I got some sleep in the back of my 4runner and then got up early to shoot the first light of 2018. It was a crisp and clear morning above the deep blue lake. After I got the shots I wanted, I packed up and made the 14 hour drive back home to the hustle and bustle of Southern California. It was a bit depressing trading the stunning forests and fresh air of Oregon for the traffic jams and smog of Los Angeles. I can’t wait to get back on the road!
