Arequipa, Peru

The final destination of my journey was Arequipa. Having read numerous positive reviews about this colonial-era capital, I was excited to explore this historical gem. Arequipa was established around 1540 and was originally named “The Beautiful Town of Our Lady of the Valley of Arequipa.” The architecture was stunning, significantly shaped by Spanish designs. The city’s history was fascinating to learn about as well, and I visited one of the old monasteries founded in the 1500s.

I wandered through the city streets, enjoying the amazing food and enjoying rooftop bars where I could sip a delightful pisco sour as the sunset bathed the towering volcanoes in a warm glow. Arequipa is nestled between two spectacular volcanoes, Misti and Chachani, which rise majestically over the desert terrain. Not far from here, the famous ice maiden Juanita was discovered at the top of a high mountain. Momia Juanita is the remarkably preserved frozen remains of a girl from the Inca Empire, who was sacrificed to the Inca gods between 1440 and 1480 when she was around 12–15 years old.

As my trip came to an end, I started to prepare for my journey back home. My heart was full after an incredible adventure in a land I had longed to visit. The exquisite food, vibrant people, and vast nature left a lasting impression. I look forward to returning to Peru to explore more of its wonders!
